The breed’s royal lineage includes a dramatic and somewhat macabre historical footnote involving Mary, Queen of Scots. When she was executed for treason in 1587, her small spaniel (a direct ancestor of the modern Cavalier) was reportedly found hiding beneath the folds of her heavy velvet skirts after her beheading. The terrified little dog refused to leave his mistress’s side and had to be physically removed by the executioners. Afterward, the dog was washed, cared for by Mary’s servants, and lived out the rest of its life at her estate, cementing the breed’s early reputation for fierce, unwavering loyalty.

History of Cavalier dog breed

The distinctive chestnut-colored marking on the head of a red-and-white Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is known as the “Blenheim spot” or “Blenheim lozenge.” According to breed legend, this unique marking originated in the 1700s when Sarah Churchill, the Duchess of Marlborough, was anxiously waiting for news of her husband’s safe return from the War of the Spanish Succession at Blenheim Palace. The story goes that she nervously pressed her thumbs onto the heads of her pregnant spaniels, and when the puppies were born, they each bore a chestnut thumbprint on their foreheads. Today, this marking is a highly prized hallmark of the Blenheim Cavalier.

The modern Cavalier King Charles Spaniel was essentially “recreated” in the 1920s by an American named Roswell Eldridge. By the early 20th century, the breed had been bred to have the extremely flat, pug-like faces seen in modern King Charles Spaniels. However, Eldridge was fascinated by the longer-nosed spaniels depicted in 17th-century royal portraits by artists like Sir Peter Lely. He traveled to the UK and offered a £25 prize at the prestigious Crufts dog show for the dog that most closely resembled the historical paintings. A dog named “Ann’s Son” won the prize, and breeders subsequently used him to literally breed the longer, flatter muzzle back into the lineage, creating the modern Cavalier as we know it today.
